Prague Bites: I’m Having So Matcha Fun!

My favorite color is green. Matcha green. I’m talking about that perfect, deep grassy shade that means the matcha has been made just right: not too milky, quality matcha, hand-whisked to perfection.

I have had an intense matcha craving throughout my internship, likely because I am reaching a state of caffeine reliance in my everyday routine. After all, communications it-girls tend to be caffeinated and creative (#workhardplayhard). All that to say, I have tried a lot of matchas – and, to be transparent, my pockets have felt the consequences. I just love them too matcha!

And, of course, I love a good matcha selfie!

These selfies are proof that I have taken my Prague matcha research very seriously. Extensive taste-testing has helped me narrow it down to my top three!

#3: Sensu Cafe

Coming in at number three is Sensu Cafe. The experience feels authentic, and you can immediately tell that they take their matcha seriously. I ordered the mango matcha with coconut milk, and it was the perfect balance of creamy, fruity and earthy. It was not too sweet, and the matcha actually held its own against the competing flavors of creamy coconut milk and fresh mango purée.

The matcha itself was a gorgeous grassy green and did not disappoint. I also enjoyed an Earl Grey cake with my order. While I would say the dessert leaned more citrusy to complement the bergamot in the Earl Grey, it was still a lovely confection.

One thing to note about Sensu is its location. It is outside of the picture-perfect Prague that you might imagine when visiting the city. In fact, my roommates and I couldn’t help but feel like we had somehow been transported to an ambiguous area of the United States. There was construction, modern architecture and a very different atmosphere from the historic center.

Overall, I would recommend Sensu to anyone looking for a solid, quality matcha and an experience that feels a little different from the typical Prague café scene.

#2: Supernova Bakehouse

At number two, and this one was an experience, we have Supernova Bakehouse’s Prague 7 location in Holešovice.

Why this specific location, you might ask? Because of their brunch!

Imagine this: an Earl Grey matcha that is sweet, but balanced, with the umami earthiness of matcha and a touch of bergamot. Personally, I could have gone for even more bergamot, but it was still delicious.

In addition to this fabulous matcha, my roommates and I feasted on a super brunch. The spread featured eggs that were fluffy and scrambled to perfection, two sausages that were hearty and packed with flavor, sliced Gouda cheese, a light side salad tossed in a Dijon vinaigrette, herbed garlic butter (the best ever), and three pieces of toast with strawberry jam.

Every bite seemed to have its own perfect combination of flavors. Then came a sip of that matcha. So good.

And here is my recommendation: matcha + brunch + thrifting. Stay tuned for one of the best vintage stores in Prague, which happens to be nearby! Make a morning of it, grab brunch at Supernova, order the matcha, and then go treasure hunting through the vintage shops of Holešovice.

#1: Matcha Koncept

And finally, my number one – and by far my most-visited – matcha spot in Prague: Matcha Koncept.

This is it.

Their matcha is high quality, and their flavors are top tier. Lavender, mango, Earl Grey, Jasmin Cloud… the list goes on. The location is also very centrally located and easy to get to from the Prague center, which makes it an easy stop whether you are exploring the city or just need a little pick-me-up.

I frequent Matcha Koncept when I get off work early – or when I can challenge myself to leave my apartment a little earlier and grab a matcha before work.

While the other two places I mentioned serve delicious matcha, I have to say that Matcha Koncept does it right every time. Not too sweet, not too bitter. Just right. It has that umami, grassy flavor I look for in a good matcha, while still pairing decadently with their homemade syrups.

They also have plenty of milk alternatives, and as an almond girly, I really appreciate that!

So… Is Prague a Matcha City?

Overall, if you are in Prague and you are a matcha lover, the good news is that you are covered. Whether you want an authentic matcha experience, a full brunch spread or a sweet pick-me-up before work, there is a spot for you.

And since I have just a little over a week left in my internship, best believe I am ready for matcha more (enough matcha puns?)!
